1898-1930
During this time period, many important events occurred that helped to define the way America reacts to different situations. Many of these events help us to observe the values of America and how they correlate to other events that occur outside of this time period. Some major events during this time period include The Spanish-American War and World War I. America at this time was dealing with and exploring the subject of foreign relations. Woman during this time period went through many changes as well as helped to develop America in different ways. After many years of fighting, women gain the right to vote through the 19th amendment in 1920. During World War I women helped out in many ways for the war effort. Also during this time period, many different ideas and movements started up which were inconsistant of previous ones. More ideas of individuality, expressing oneself through ones own choices and actions started to become widely known. A "generation gap" started to occur during this time as well. "Older women" often expressed the beliefs that woman could only sport either a career or a family but never both at the same time because of how it would hinder their ability to do each at a high level. The "new woman" of this time period, believed more in the power of their own actions. They sought out to change the view and traditions of what a woman is supposed to act like and behave. Woman went out and looked for their own careers some more radical than previous jobs that were acquired by woman. They also found no problem in having a family while seeking after their own aspirations. Higher education for woman during this time became more of a norm. Social changes such as what women are "supposed" to say, act, wear, and more start to change. Many people
